Rallye Catalunya - Car 94, 126 starters and 46 finished, DNF SS2 due to loss of coolant and engine overheating
Trevor was navigated by Rick Spurgeon on this event.
The 1998 Catalunya Rally, one of the most popular in the WRC, both with teams and spectators was one that Didier Auriel would win with Fredy Loix second and Tommi Makinen third. Trevor and Ian would be using the yellow Mini WNR 30S. Unlike their other internationals this would be a tarmac rally, which is often hard on steering and suspension as the surface has no give on landing (40% attrition rate on this event).
It began on Monday the 20th April from its base in the seaside resort of Lloret de Mar, north of Barcelona. On the first and third days, it headed inland towards Vic and Girona. However, the second day's leg headed south of Barcelona and inland of Tarragona before returning to Lloret. The rally covered 19 special stages and a total of 401 competitive kilometres.
Unfortunately, Trevor and Rick would go out in SS2 due to the engine overheating and loss of coolant.
One of their service crew, it was fair to say looked like a hippy and liked to smoke the odd joint. On returning to port in the UK, as they unloaded from the ferry, they were taken to one side and found themselves surrounded by 20 Police Officers. Trevor gave the lad a hard look conveying “What have you got us into?". The senior officer requested to search their service van, whereupon he found a large holdall. Trevor told him "You really don't want to open that", which prompted him to immediately do so. To his horror he found it full of sweaty underpants and race overalls that had become very foisty in the Spanish heat. Dropping it like a stone, both he and his entourage disappeared in a breath, leaving them to head home!
