St Wilfrids Rally, Car 54, 45th 1st in class
Matt Smith co-driven by Simon Hawken
A historic car rally with a full field of 65 cars organised by the Ripon Car Club. This was the first outing in WNR since the rebuild to category 4 historic specification and came with all the worries (unfounded) of an untried rally car. Scrutineering on the Saturday in Thirsk went well, which was a relief, and the event started from a damp Masham market square on the Sunday morning. Simon, attempting his first regularity rally, was superbly organised, a product of his army background. Great to have him along, as he had come all the way from Norfolk to navigate.
The day remained wet which caused some of the special tests on both grass and forest tracks to be 'interesting'. Long regularities with multiple speed changes were testing but Simon managed admirably and most impressively did not make one wrong slot in 150 miles! 8 of the special tests were on the gravel tracks of Boltby forest. Wet, muddy and very slippy and rough! Unsure how we kept the exhaust which was fairly well beaten up. Only my fifth event driving, so I was on a steep learning curve.
A great day, WNR did not miss a beat and a super result for Simon's first ever historic event.
