Ross Traders Classic Rally Car 38 18th overall and 1st in class, winner of the Vaughan Cup
Matt was navigated by Simon Hawken on the opening event of 202o.
The event was centred at the army training camp Caerwent and was a day / evening event. A cold windy day with drizzle to keep the tarmac and unmade roads slippy made for a frenetic rally with wonderful long but very complex tests during the afternoon and into the evening. Regularities were run both in the extensive camp grounds and in the surrounding countryside providing real challenges for navigator and driver alike.
A few close calls on the tests but WNR was undamaged and I learnt a great deal about handling a Mini in slippy conditions. Simon, as before was excellent on the maps and we were able to have a good go at the regularities. Approximately 30 Miles of special Tests, mixed with 60 miles of regularity and 40 road miles. The finish was at Ross Motor Club.
The Vaughan Trophy and our class award were presented by the organiser of the first event in 1969!
As Simon reflected ....."Well the Ross Traders Historic didn’t disappoint as the season opener to this years HRCR Clubman Championship. Caerwent training area was a real challenge to nav round and greasier than a grease monkey on a well greased pole keeping driver on his toes. Regularities at night were a whole new ball game but somehow we came away with the Vaughan Trophy for 1st novice crew OA, 1st in class and 18th OA from a starting field of 44.
I’ll take that having only navved on a few 12cars and 1 historic event before!"
Little did we know that the Covid pandemic would stop motorsport in its tracks, such the next event would not be until September 2021!
