Trackrod Rally - Car 89, 45th and 2nd in class (there were 101 starters and 70 finishers)

The 6th round of the 1996 Mintex Rally Series: A National 'A' event comprising 72 stage miles (7 gravel and 1 asphalt Special Stages - 8 in total) and 132 miles of linking public roads in North Yorkshire on September 28th. Rally Headquarters was the Hilton National Hotel in Leeds and scrutineering in Central Motor Auctions at Rothwell.
The event focused on the classic North Yorkshire Moors stages featuring Olivers's Mount, Langdale, Staindale, Dalby South & West, Gale Rigg, Cropton and the spectator stage at Duncombe Park. Despite the Rally HQ being in Leeds, the first stage was once again in Scarborough and if you can explain this then you're a better man than me! However, on a more positive note, the Trackrod was a well organised and well marshalled event.
After a quick blast around Olivers Mount the rally route moved through Scarborough. On this road section a perpetual police escort seemed to be the crew's privilege and made the transport section a breeze.
Once in "open country" a service halt preceded entry to the forest stages which proved to be slippery at first due to a light morning drizzle but drier later. Steady progress was made and the car behaved impeccably, as the day proceeded the crew were able to enjoy the event more and more. The high point of the day was the moment when the blue Mini caught and passed a prominent Skoda Felicia in the "Woodyard" of the Dalby South stage. Despite being focused on the stage, the crew were able to feel the great response from the large crowd. The final stage was a spectator stage at Duncombe Park.
The day turned out to be a dream with good times on excellent stages and in the end a 45th overall 2nd in class finish was the result (Just 7 seconds off the class win!).
The finish was in Leeds town centre, at six o'clock on a rainy Saturday night, the only complication being an amazing traffic snarl up on the return. However, an excellent conclusion and the best finish of the year was recorded.
